چکیده

We introduce the bisector energy of an n-point set P in R2, defined as E(P) = ∣∣{(a, b, c, d) ∈ P | a, b have the same perpendicular bisector as c, d}∣∣ . If no line or circle contains M(n) points of P, then we prove that for any ε > 0 E(P) = O ( M(n) 2 5n 12 5 +ε +M(n)n ) . We also derive the lower bound E(P) = Ω(M(n)n2), which matches our upper bound when M(n) is large. We use our upper bound on E(P) to obtain two rather different results: (i) If P determines O(n/√log n) distinct distances, then for any 0 < α ≤ 1/4, either there exists a line or circle that contains nα points of P, or there exist Ω(n8/5−12α/5−ε) distinct lines that contain Ω( √ log n) points of P. This result provides new information on a conjecture of Erdős [7] regarding the structure of point sets with few distinct distances. (ii) If no line or circle contains M(n) points of P, the number of distinct perpendicular bisectors determined by P is Ω ( min { M(n)−2/5n8/5−ε,M(n)−1n2 }) . This appears to be the first higher-dimensional example in a framework for studying the expansion properties of polynomials and rational functions over R, initiated by Elekes and Rónyai [2]. ∗Part of this research was performed while the authors were visiting the Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics (IPAM) in Los Angeles, which is supported by the National Science Foundation. Infrared Surface Brightness Distances to Cepheids: a comparison of Bayesian and linear-bisector calculations

We have compared the results of Bayesian statistical calculations and linearbisector calculations for obtaining Cepheid distances and radii by the infrared surface brightness method. We analyzed a set of 38 Cepheids using a Bayesian Markov Chain Monte Carlo method that had been recently studied with a linear-bisector method. The distances obtained by the two techniques agree to 1.5% ± 0.6% with...

A 3-D Failure Initiation Criterion from a Sharp V-notch Edge in Elastic Brittle Structures

A three-dimensional failure initiation criterion in brittle materials containing a sharp V-notch is presented and validated by experiments. It is based on simultaneous fulfilment of the stress requirement and a finite fracture mechanics energy release rate (ERR) requirement. Since the ERR cannot determine failure initiation direction for dominant mode III loading, the failure initiation orienta...

Fourier Transform Infra Red Spectroscopic Studies on Epilepsy, Migraine and Paralysis

In the present paper, we have studied immunglobulin (IgG) of epileptic children, migraineous and paralytic patients.  We have compared our results with normal healthy controls. We found that the bands ranges from 1151.94 to 1168.28 cm-1 due to phospholipids (P-O-C ) group appear in some of the migraineous and paralytic patients only. These bands are absent in normal and epileptic patients. The ...

Bisector Surface of Rational Space

Given a point and a rational curve in the plane, their bisector curve is rational 2]. However, in general, the bisector of two rational curves in the plane is not rational 3]. Given a point and a rational space curve, this paper shows that the bisector surface is a rational ruled surface. Moreover, given two rational space curves, we show that the bisector surface is rational (except for the de...
